Linking to a piece1 they recently published, Slate tweeted this the other day:
SNL has no clue how to handle this political moment.
Which I admit is a funny tweet, whether or not it was meant to be.
But I beg to differ.
I would argue SNL is doing exactly what it always does, that it has played the same role for the past forty-eight years: a sense-making apparatus for the masses. A support structure for the neoliberal agenda, an instrumental accomplice to the status quo and the entertainment industries.
