The repercussions of fandom culture stretch far and wide here in the West. Its effect on the psyche, coupled with the fact that it is almost unavoidable at this point, has given rise to an intolerance for criticism and an emotional attachment to the passenger seat, the ticket holder position, and the role of spectator.
Criticism has become inconvenient because it acts as a disruption of the soothing facade of fandom. Our current passive position is a reassurance to us; the option of sitting back and watching — which absolves us of responsibility— has become too seductive, impossible to resist. This results in an aversion to criticality, and reluctance to acknowledge flaws. A fear of wrinkling the smooth.
